Tips on Bulldog Care...

  • If you're considering a new pet, consider the bulldog.  Bulldogs do well with small living spaces and tend to stay put when they are indoors.  They're especially good for apartment dwellers because they usually do not need a yard.  However, Bulldogs still need some exercise, as they need to use up the energy that they store while they are indoors.  Most bulldogs will stay healthy with just a few minutes of jogging or walking.  They won't want to do much more than that because they're fairly lazy.  For this reason, it is important to regulate food intake.
  • The Bulldog has to maintain a fairly strict diet and it is important not to overfeed it.  This ensures that the Bulldog will keep its stocky stature and continue to be healthy.  Overfeeding may lead to obesity because of its lack of desire to exercise, which is highly common to this breed.
  • Maintenance and grooming for the bulldog is also fairly easy. Because its fur is very short and smooth, all it needs is daily brushing with a bristle brush.  Its short hair allows air to reach its skin and this is why it usually does not need regular bathing. It is recommended, however, that Bulldogs are wiped with a damp cloth regularly as it can accumulate odor-emitting dirt between the folds of its skin.
  • When it comes to keeping the Bulldog comfortable, it's important that it's kept in the right temperature.  It does not adapt quickly to changes in temperature.  While it finds difficulty in keeping warm in cold weather, it also finds it hard to adjust to the heat when it gets too warm.  Cases of heat stroke are common with this breed and it is not the type of dog that one can leave in the car or out in the yard under the heat of the sun.  Times of warm weather are usually when the Bulldog is laziest.
  • Although Bulldogs have some health issues, it's nothing that will be detrimental to being a good house pet.  One of the more common health issues of this breed pertains to its respiratory system.  This breed has some breathing problems because of the size of its windpipes so it is important to give it good ventilation.

Your new puppy...

  • Proper socializatin of your puppy is important to puppy training.  A properly behaved pet is very important when it comes to English Bulldogs.  It is best to begin the process of properly socializing your dog before they reach the age of 12 weeks.
  • This time frame is known as the developmental stage. During this time your dog is more likely to learn how to behave in social settings. They will learn to how to behave with other dogs, people, and new surroundings such as the dog park. With this foundation they will be less likely to act timid or be afraid of new dogs, people, and environments for the rest of their lives.
  • House breaking can be a tough venture if you're not prepared.  Crate training is a very successful form of house breaking, but it does take patience and consistancy.  Take your puppy out to the designated area in your yard frequently.  After meals, give your Bulldog puppy 10 to 15 minutes and take him 'out' or 'potty' - which ever you decide to call it.
  • Try to feed your Bulldog puppy at the same time everyday.  This will help to establish a routine and after a few weeks, your puppy will know when to go 'potty' outside.

How The Bulldog Got Its Face

When the Good Lord gave out faces to the dogs long ago,
He found, when he had issued them there was still one dog to go -
"Where's this dog's face?" He called aloud, "I know I must have made it.
There must be someone hereabouts who's clumsily mislaid it."
A shy young angel then stepped up, "Forgive me, Lord," he said. He stuttered and he stammered and he turned a little red-
"I never thought it was a face - it fell out of your bag.
So I thought you had discarded it as just a piece of rag.-
"So I promptly went and used it for so very many things,
Like polishing up the halos and waxing up the wings.
"It's creased and crumpled as you see - in truth it's a disgrace..
I don't know how, my Dearest Lord, you can use it for a face.
"I realize it's all my fault, and there's no one else to blame.
I trust you can forgive me Lord, my heart's so full of shame."
"Of course I have forgiven you, but here we've got a mess,
So I'll make amends to this poor dog and him I'll truly bless.
"He'll be called an 'English Bulldog' that's about the only place
Where the people are so silly as to love an ugly face.
But he'll be kind and gentle and of courage he'll be full -
As well as love and loyalty - the ugly, lovely Bull."
And that is how, my children, in that long-gone year of grace
The dear old English Bulldog got his lovely, ugly face. . .
